DIY home improvement plumbing projects can be a lot of fun, but if you don’t know what you’re doing, they also end up being quite costly. There are some projects that are complicated enough to require hiring a plumber. But if you want to do some DIY plumbing work around your house, insulating the pipes is an easy project that has a huge impact on your monthly energy bills.

The trickiest part of insulating your pipes is choosing the appropriate type of insulation. Options include fiberglass insulation, polyethylene and neoprene foam. Each house is built differently, and as such, has different needs when it comes to insulation. Foam tubing insulation is the easiest to install and comes designed for specific types of plumbing. If you choose to insulate with fiberglass, you will need to wrap the insulation with plastic to avoid condensation dripping from the pipes.

Unfortunately, for this project you’ll begin your adventures as a plumber by thoroughly cleaning the pipes with a mild cleaning solution. You may need an abrasive to get more stubborn material off. There should be no dirt or grease on the pipes when you begin installing the insulation.

If you decide to use foam tubing insulation, all you’ll need to do is fit the foam tube around the pipes. The tubes can be easily cut to size to fit in smaller sections of piping. This is especially useful for corners in the plumbing-you can make diagonal cuts to get full coverage of the pipes. When making diagonal cuts, be sure to use a measuring tape to get the exact measurements of the section of pipe. When insulating long plumbing stretches, place multiple pieces of foam tubing end-to-end. Once the section is covered, be sure to duct tape the seams between different pieces of tubing.

Other types of insulation will require you to wind material around the plumbing. If you experience difficulty getting full coverage around pipe bends, use duct tape to cover up any remaining gaps.

While the majority of your plumbing should be insulated, avoid getting insulation material too close to the water heater. This can be a major fire hazard. Always cut off the insulation at least one foot away from the pipe’s connection to the water heater.

One of the challenges of many homeowners is basement waterproofing. It creates a domino effect problem if not done correctly. Basement waterproofing will let you do many things in your basement with the first one of having a usable basement for whatever purpose you may decide.

The best time to do waterproofing is when the foundation is built. Waterproofing a basement efficiently when it is first built will ensure that it will last for a long time. This is also the best time to do basement waterproofing because it’s much easier to get into small spaces before they are closed off due to constructions, such as corners and even areas where drainage pipes will be installed. If you got an old house, then you have to give the basement a very through check before deciding how to do the basement waterproofing. It will be wise to contact a professional when you do waterproofing so that you won’t need to do it all over again because the waterproofing wasn’t done correctly.

There are two ways to do waterproofing. These are external basement waterproofing and interior basement waterproofing. One of the common methods of external waterproofing is tanking. This refers to the process in which a bonding substance or membrane is applied to the outside walls of your basement. Make sure that the tanking takes place as your home is being constructed, especially if your basement is underground. Another way of external waterproofing is the outside drainage system. In this method, your basement will be built in such a way that the floors of the basement slope toward your home’s sump pump. For quick removal of any moisture from your basement, a plastic honeycomb membrane is applied to the walls and floor of your basement. The French drain is also another method of external waterproofing. This form of waterproofing is usually installed on houses that are constructed in parts of the country with heavy rainfall levels and other types of moisture-based weather. External waterproofing method is the only one recognized by the International Building Code as efficient enough to keep water from doing any intense structural damage to a building or home.

Interior waterproofing is used to keep moisture from making its way into your basement. A sealant is applied on the walls and floor of the basement so that water and moisture can’t seep through. It also keeps molds and mildew from growing. Interior Sealants aren’t technically basement waterproofing materials, but they can help you make do while you are working on other waterproofing methods. For best results, it is recommended that you do both the external and interior waterproofing, just to make sure.

It is important to make sure that you do waterproofing because your basement forms the foundation of your house and if it is not in the best condition, it can jeopardize your entire house in the long run.

There are many people who would want to have a new toilet installed at home. With a new toilet come the expenses associated with it. The rising prices of the materials to be used for the installation of the toilet would make most people think twice on hiring a professional to do the job. There are many tutorials that can guide you on the proper procedures of what to do to have a new toilet installed properly. These guides would be very helpful when you would opt to do the whole project on your own.

When you know something about plumbing then you would not need any help from a professional but if you just want to do the job yourself in order to save on the cost then you would need to consider these points before going on with the project yourself. This can help you decide if you are fit to do the whole project by yourself or you would need the help of a professional.

Before starting with the project you would need to evaluate first the area where you need the toilet installed. This would give you a good idea of what is needed for the installation. The area should be within easy reach to the nearest water line. Water supply is very important for a toilet to function properly therefore an easy access to the house’s water supply line is very important.

You would need to consider the drain pipe as well. This should have the right dimensions in order for the toilet to drain properly. You would not want to deal with a stuck toilet in the future. Having the proper drain pipes installed can save you the trouble of having to redo the whole project. This saves you the cost of having to hire a plumber in case your toilet gets stuck often.

You would also need to have the right materials for the toilet. This should match the diameter of the drain that you have prepared to prevent any leaks. Leaks under the toilet can be very nasty and can cause damage to the flooring of the bathroom requiring you to repair it which can cost more. The proper level of the floor is also important to have the toilet lay flat to prevent damaging the ceramic when you sit on it. An uneven toilet can crack needing you to replace the whole set which costs more than you would expect. With this you can decide if you can do it alone or hire a professional for the job.

Before we buy an air conditioner, there should be a better understanding in us about the different kinds of air conditioners available. In the following section of the article, we try to provide brief descriptions of each of the variants.

There are basically three primary kinds of air conditioner. These are:
- Window mounted
- Wall mounted
- Portable air conditioners

Window mounted air conditioners
These are the most popular of air conditioners and need to be fitted into the windows. They actually slide inside the opening in a double-hung window. These versions came in two variants – cooling only or cooling and heating together. The positives going for it are its low costs, compatibility with the wiring already present in the house, and ease of installation. However, they are specially designed for double-hung windows so if you have sliding windows you will need to pay for a separate installation kit. The prices generally range from anything between $200 and $800 depending upon the capacity of the air conditioner.

Wall mounted air conditioner
These air-conditioners can be permanently mounted in a wall. A metal sleeve needs to be attached through the wall and the air conditioner chassis is slid on it from inside the room. These air-conditionerses are also available in cooling or cooling and heating varieties. These units are generally better looking than window mounted air conditioners and also do not block the windows in the rooms. The problem is with installation which would require you to make a hole in the wall. If it is a wall of concrete then making a hole in itself would be an effort. One also has to be very careful about any wiring or pipes passing through the wall. Damaging one of them can severely delay your installation. And you would land up with more hassles. However, once installed, these units are easier to remove for replacement and repairs. The prices of these air conditioners range from $400 to $700.

Portable Air Conditioners
These air conditioners are the most user friendly. They don’t need to be installed. Just plug it in and it is ready to start work. They also come with wheels. So you can pull them from one room to another. This way you can actually avail the comforts of air conditioner in all your rooms by investing on a single unit. These units however, are priced a little higher than the window or wall mounted air conditioner. Their price varies anything from $700 to $1000.
